Tenth Day Malvan to Ratnagiri 14th August
Race moves into the final stretches
The CEAT Mumbai Xpress Autorickshaw Rally 2007 moved into its final stages today with the latest stage between the beautiful beach resort of Malvan and the more mountainous region of Ratnagiri. Ratnagiri is historically famous for it long coastline and convenient harbours, together with it comparative nearness to the Arabian Sea. The surrounding area is bounded by the Sahyadri Hills on the West and the heavy rainfall off these hills results in a highly eroded landscape in the coastal region, presenting pristine beaches in and around Ratnagiri.
Today's leg of the rally ran a distance of 160 km, mostly through steep mountain roads as the participants negotiated a route through the Sahyadri Hills. "We do everything for the safety of participants. In the morning briefing we pointed out how dangerous this section could be. I am happy that the team suffered no serious injuries and do hope no such incidents will happen in the future" commented the rally's lead organiser Aravind Kumar Bremanandam.
The rally received enormous attention from the local media with villagers coming to the participants to show them their pictures in newspapers. "I gave my first autograph in India" New Yorker racer Daniel Leigh told us. "We visited a school and donated the money we raised in a fundraising night at the Whiskey River bar in Manhattan. A kid came to me, showing me my picture in the paper and asked for an autograph. It was awesome!"
By six o'clock all of the teams were at their destination hotels.
Wednesday the race travels further up North towards Mumbai to Mahad, Maharashtra.
