The CEAT Mumbai Xpress Autorickshaw Rally 2007 kicked off today with much excitement, as this incredible thirteen day rally right across southern India got under way. On the start line this morning were 32 teams of 72 participants, all crammed into their spectacularly decorated Autorickshaws, ready to begin an epic 1921km rally through mountains and monsoons, as they venture all the way from Chennai to Mumbai in this iconic vehicle of the Indian subcontinent.
This year has been the most international rally yet with over 7 different countries represented here, including participants from India, UK, USA, Canada, Croatia, Hungary, and Ireland. It is also the 50th anniversary of the Autorickshaw this year, and rather suitably, the CEAT Mumbai Xpress Autorickshaw Rally 2007 is being conducted as a not-for-profit event to raise money to improve the lifestyles and educational opportunities of Indias children, promote Road Safety, and raise the profile of the growing trend of Adventure Tourism.
This year saw a tough battle for the title of CEAT Mumbai Xpress Autorickshaw Rally 2007 Champion, in which competitors scored points by completing not only the days stage, but also for challenges set by the organisers along the route, and for visiting their assigned schools to deliver supplies. This year's Champions were Ian and Rachel Bayles of Team Pukka Tuk Tuk, who were last years Autorickshaw Challenge Champions too!
Ultimately the real winner of this event though is hopefully the Indian children involved, however for those still eager to know, the final top 10 scoreboard is as follows:
An autorickshaw (auto or rickshaw or tempo in popular parlance) is a vehicle usually for hire and is one of the chief modes of transport in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka it is also popular in many other countries.
