Chennai, India (PRWEB) December 19, 2006 -- On August the 21st of 2006, one
of the worlds strangest races began in Chennai (still better known to
Europeans as Madras) and headed for Kanniyakumari, a city over 1,000 miles
away on the southern tip of the continent. This race, organised by the
infamous Adventure Rally Association of Budapest, who, not content to have
driven through southern Europe to the deserts of North Western Africa in
Ladas and Trabants, invited all participant to travel on the ubiquitous
Autorickshaw. Dubbed 'An Amazing Race for the Clinically Insane' the
participants enjoyed not only some of the most beautiful sights in all of
India, but also the challenge of obstacles ranging from monsoons through
crowds to unpredictable roads, all on India's most iconic mode of transport,
the Auto Rickshaw.
The 2006 event proved to be so popular with amateur adventurers from all
over the world that the organisers this year are doubling the entire event
in its scope and its excitement. In 2007 two new rallies will be organised,
giving adventurers the chance to choose their own level of endurance, and
with double the participants, there will be well over double the partying
done as well. After last years coverage of the event by publications as
diverse as The Times, FHM, BBC, Overdrive Magazine and many more, excitement
is really building for the 2007 rallies.
As well as competing for the coveted title of Autorickshaw Rally World
Champion, the amateur adventurers will all be helping to promote vital local
charities in their fight against child abuse and the exploitation of child
labour.
The Autorickshaw the participants will be using to pursue both these worthy
goals are efficiently adapted motorcycles fit for three people, travelling
light. Their ease of use, economy, and extreme ease of maintenance and
repair has made them the number one workhorse from Bangladesh to Pakistan.
Capable of 55km/h unloaded and with a following wind, the participants are
likely to achieve a statelier cruise of 35km/h dependent on road conditions.
Weighing only 600 kilograms, Autorickshaws are exhilarating to drive,
convenient to refuel, and reparable at just about every village and
settlement on the entire sub-continent. Whilst the adventurers may want to
test both themselves and their vehicles to the limit, the organisers drew
the line at three people to a vehicle for safety.
