MOBILE INTERNET IN INDIA

If you want to get internet on the go with your laptop then India is one of the cheapest places to get it. The connection itself is good for emailing, chatting and moderate browsing. Graphics intensive sites would be a pain because the speed is just about the same as in a dialup connection.

It is very good when you are on the move around the country, but only works if you are standing. Otherwise the system crashes (my laptop crashed 4 times on the train) and internet cannot get to a proper speed.

The connection speed varies from the card to the phone. In my personal experience the phone has been faster at times, but I’ve never reached a final conclusion on this issue.

There are 2 choices:

1. Buy a CDMA phone with a cable for approx 3700 Rupees ($80) and you will still have 2000 Rupees credit. The cost of the internet is 30 rupees per hour during the day and 15 rupees per hour between 10pm and 6am. You will be charged on a minute basis. The advantages of the phone is that it is cheaper in upfront costs and it doesn't drain your laptop’s battery. A fully charged phone battery lasts about 3-4 hrs. On the other hand you cannot use the phone for longer than 4 hours because the battery drains and there is no way to use the phone for browsing while having it connected to a power source. And one more thing, you can use this phone to call people!

2. The second option is to buy a card that you can insert into your computer. The price is around 6000 Rupees ($150). There is a monthly fee of 1500 Rupees to use the card but you can use the internet for an unlimited amount of time. You can also use this card to make phone calls and send SMSs, but you’ll need a headset for making calls.

Generally this is a nifty tool for traveling and completing your work or anything else you need to do on internet in India.
